At the GAC (Governmental Affairs Conference) in Washington, D.C. this year, there was a small group that took a tour of Lincoln's Cottage. I'd never even heard of it. It's only been open for tours for the last 5 years. It sits on Soldier's Hill which has been home to a veteran's hospital and rehabilitation hospital.They haven't turned the home into a typical restoration. Most of the furnishings were sold and so they have left it completely open and unfurnished. It allows a lot of people to come in and stand and learn about the cottage and the Lincoln family. It was very interesting. Because it sits higher than the White House, the Lincoln's would come here to escape the heat. After Tad died, Mary came here to escape and enjoy the solitude. She also spent her time caring for the soldiers.
